With just three classrooms, each one of our staff members plays an important role for all the children at the school, not just their own students. Our teachers have varied backgrounds which makes a rich teaching environment. But the one thing they have in common is their love of teaching.
Miss Maria started teaching preschool in 1987 while she was attending Loyola Marymount University. She received her teaching credential in 1990 and taught elementary school in San Diego County for 9 ½ years. During this period, she took classes toward her administrative credential from both CSUSM and National University.
Maria is happily married to a Long Beach Fireman. When they moved to Long Beach in 1999, she took some time to stay at home and raise her three boys. In 2006, she was hired as a preschool teacher at the school. In July 2007, she became the director of Discovery Preschool. In her spare time, she enjoys sewing, scrap booking, camping and reading.
“It is as privilege to be given the opportunity to instill a love of learning in children. I am truly blessed.”
Teacher, Yellow Room
Miss Laura has taught at Discovery Preschool since 2008, but her teaching career began in 1996 as an elementary school teacher. She has a B.A. in English and her M.Ed. in Educational Counseling. She received her teaching credential from Whittier College in 1995.
Prior to teaching preschool, she was a stay-at-home mom to daughters Katherine and Amy, who both attended Discovery. In her spare time, she enjoys travel, books and movies. Twice a year the family travels to rural New Jersey, where she and her husband were raised.
Teacher, Blue Room
Miss Sumer began her career at Discovery as a teacher's aide and has since been promoted to teacher. She is very dedicated to early childhood and thrilled to have the chance to shape the future of so many preschoolers. She has studied early childhood education at Golden West College. She loves learning and is planning to take more classes as time allows.
Sumer is a member of the Los Altos United Church of Christ and works with the youth of the church as well as teaching preschool. She is married and has two children. The youngest, Sydney, attends Discovery Preschool and her older son is in elementary school.
Teacher's Aide , Yellow room
Miss Susan comes to us after being a grandparent at our school. She loved helping in the classroom as her two grandsons attended our school. She loved it so much that she went back to school and began working on her early childhood certificate. She is a wonderful addition to Room 3.
Teacher, Red Room
Miss Hannah was born and raised in Los Altos and attended Long Beach City College.
She received her certificate in Early Childhood Education in 2007. During college she
was a nanny for a child who attended this preschool and she fell in love with the program.
She has been teaching preschool since 2010 but says no other preschool could compare
to Discovery. It has been her dream to work here.
In her spare time she enjoys reading, line dancing and is currently very busy raising a one year old daughter named Zoey.
Teacher's Aide, Red Room
Miss Cathie began working at the preschool as a teacher's aide in September 2004 and has been working with Miss Hannah for over a year. "I absolutely love working with this age group! They are so inquisitive about everything. They are like little sponges!" she says.
She has lived in Los Altos her whole life. She went to Tincher, Hill Middle school, and Wilson High School. She also attended Long Beach City College and Cal State Long Beach. Before she started her family, she worked for the Long Beach Unified School District in both kindergarten and special needs fourth grade.
She has been married to her husband for 35 years and has three children; a son, 34, and two daughters, 30 and 27. In her free time, she feeds the homeless with her church, fast walks with friends, and makes quilts with her 85-year-old mother-in-law.
Teacher's Aide, Blue Room
Miss Breanna joined our staff again in September 2018. She is currently a full time student at LBCC and is planning to transfer to CSULB in the fall. She is an Early Childhood Education Major.
