Discovery Preschool has 3 classrooms: Red Room, Blue Room and Yellow Room. We have a director, 3 teachers and 3 aides; they all play an important role in our student's lives. All our teachers come from different backgrounds which makes a rich teaching environment; the one thing they all have in common is their love of teaching.
Director of Discovery Preschool
Roxy Menendez started at Discovery Preschool as a teacher's assistant in 2008, and over the years became a substitute teacher, then the teacher of the Blue Room. She left the preschool in January 2017 to be the lead teacher at the largest Head Start program in South Los Angeles. After completing all of her education requirements, Roxy returned as Director in the fall of 2018. Discovery Preschool is where her heart is.
Roxy earned a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from California State University, Long Beach and is a credentialed Site Supervisor and Master Teacher. She is Mexican and Salvadoran-American; also bilingual in Spanish.
Teacher, Yellow Room
Miss Laura has taught at Discovery Preschool since 2008, but her teaching career began in 1996 as an elementary school teacher. She has a B.A. in English and her M.Ed. in Educational Counseling. She received her teaching credential from Whittier College in 1995.
Prior to teaching preschool, she was a stay-at-home mom to daughters Katherine and Amy, who both attended Discovery. In her spare time, she enjoys travel, books and movies. Twice a year the family travels to rural New Jersey, where she and her husband were raised.
Teacher, Blue Room
Miss Sumer began her career at Discovery as a teacher's aide and is now a teacher. She is very dedicated to early childhood and thrilled to have the chance to shape the future of so many preschoolers. She studied early childhood education at Golden West College and plans on taking more classes as time allows.
Sumer is also a member of the Los Altos United Church of Christ and works with the youth in addition to teaching preschool. She is married and has two children. The youngest, Sidney, attended Discovery Preschool and her son is in middle school.
Teacher's Aide , Yellow room
Miss Susan comes to us after being a grandparent at our school. She was a family volunteer helping in the classroom while her two grandsons attended our school. She loved our school and students so much, she went back to school and began working on her early childhood certificate. She is now an assistant in the Yellow Room.
Teacher, Red Room
Hannah Campano graduated from Cal State Long Beach with a B.A. in Child Development and Family Studies and a B.A. in Family Life Education. She is currently provisionally certified as a Family Life educator and working towards receiving her full certification. Miss Hannah started off at Discovery Preschool as a long term substitute teacher. Over the weekends, she volunteers at Miller’s Children Hospital in the child life department and has been since 2016. She is fluent in Tagalog/Filipino.
